2nd Amendment Rights

I am wondering just why if you have been convicted on a non-violent crime you should lose your second amendment right to protect yourself?
It doesn't make sense to me that a non-violent crime leads to putting yourself in a vulnerable position, especially if you are also a registered sex offender. I believe this needs reform but of course it won't be as it is a vote loser, not a vote getter.
Any thoughts?
